A
Home Win for Steve Surry in the Jamega Pro Golf Tour Event at Cumberwell Park
The Jamega Pro Golf Tour two day UK tournament, in association with Titleist
FootJoy, returned to Cumberwell
Park on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th May.
The field of 120
professionals included European Tour and Challenge Tour players amongst the
regular Jamega Tour members, alongside local talented golf professionals at the
early stages of their tour career.
Monday morning brought
on yet more rain with light winds. The
first group of the day to
tee off included Ali James, a
former Wiltshire County Captain and Manager of the Cumberwell Park Golf Club,
who was one of the five amateur players to take part in the tournament.
Steve Surry who followed in the second group was the first home with the score
to beat, after making the most of the birdie opportunities and finishing with a
score of 4 under. As the rain stopped it was Paul Maddy from Gog Magog Golf
Club who topped the leader board at the end of day one with 6 under, after a
brilliant performance, carding six birdies on the back nine.
Day two saw a better
performance from Cumberwell
Park ’s Ryan Smith, having
struggled towards the end of the first round. After a steady start and an early
birdie at the third, Smith had two unfortunate bogeys at the tenth and the
tricky, long par 4 fifteenth hole, however carried on finishing with birdies at
the final two holes. Also from Cumberwell
Park and having only
recently turned professional, James Hannam had a tough couple of days, but
finished in a positive frame and is looking forward to his next event.
Chris Hiscock from
Kingsdown Golf Club had a slow start on the first day, however kept focused and
improved in the second half of the round. Having put this behind him, Hiscock
started the final round on form with three birdies on the front nine. After a
hiccup with bogeys at the sixth and ninth, he played on to card three further
birdies finishing 4 under and in tied fifth position overall.
Mark Laskey from
Brockett Hall Golf Club played a solid game on day one, finishing with a level
par round. Preparing himself well before teeing off on day two certainly paid
off as he posted birdie after birdie with a slight lapse at the seventh
dropping a shot. He carried on to hand in the best card of the tournament, a
score of 7 under which elevated him to the top of the leader board then
patiently waited for Steve Surry and Paul Maddy to complete their rounds.
It was yet another
solid round from Steve Surry returning to the clubhouse victorious, again
taking advantage of birdie chances to give him an overall score of 8 under and
to pick up the winners cheque for £5,000. Surry commented “I played nicely on
day one, putting well and the three birdies in a row were a highlight” he
continued, “there were a few Cumberwell
Park members following us
on the final round so that added a bit of extra pressure knowing their expectations.”
Both Surry and Maddy
became aware of Laskey’s low scoring round at the twelfth so knew there was
little room for error. Maddy had played a steady round until he had an unlucky
double bogey at the thirteenth, setting him back to 6 under, however he managed
to take this back to 7 under with a birdie at the challenging fifteenth to draw
level with Laskey and Surry. Surry had everything to play for at the
final two holes, showing his class at the seventeenth as he holed a 30 foot put
in front of his audience for a birdie and then calmly making par at the last to
jump into the lead with 8 under. Surry was delighted with the result, “I had a
good game with Paul, who was unlucky on thirteen. The 30 foot put was a great
moment to make the birdie I needed at the seventeenth.”
Surry is planning to
continue playing Jamega Tour events this season alongside Europro and some
European Challenge Tour events where possible. “There were a few Cumberwell Park members following the round so that
always adds a bit extra pressure. I had a good game with Paul, who was unlucky
on 13 30’ put on 17th birdies
Ali James, Manager of Cumberwell Park Golf Club, gave a good performance in both
rounds, finishing the tournament in the mix of the professional players on the
top quarter of the leader board. Ali commented “It is great to have the
professionals playing here at Cumberwell
Park ”, he continued “we
are looking forward to another Jamega Tour event in August and we are also
hosting a PGA West Region Order of Merit event in July.”
Steve Surry has been a
member at Cumberwell
Park for 15 years where
he started as a junior and there are also a number of other professional tour
players at different stages of their career attached to the club. Cumberwell
Park Golf Club has always had a very strong emphasis on junior development and
the club’s excellent facilities attract players of all levels from around the
region. The development of the sport is not just aimed at the elite level
players but also at beginners, with the club offering coaching to all ages and
levels. A junior academy was started in 2007 which attracts 40 – 60 junior
players each year, aged between six and twelve, who attend weekly sessions to
learn and develop all aspects of the game.
